Energy

Not jumping out of bed eager to start your day?

Where does your energy go? It is time for a personal energy inventory check.

– How is your peace of mind, productivity, and ability to relax?
– Do you feel motivated and happy to take on the day?
– Do you practice self-compassion?
– Can you separate thoughts from facts and react accordingly?
– Do you recognize your emotions and express them in a healthy way?
– Do you set routines and plan to help keep decision making to a minimum?

– Are you addressing your health conditions/symptoms correctly?
– Do you plan healthy meals and fuel yourself properly?
– Do you engage in exercise?
– Do you journal or meditate to help get thoughts out of your head?
– Do you work, drive, and live in a clean, uncluttered environment?

Types of Energy

Each morning you have a certain amount of mental, emotional, and physical energy that you can spend throughout the day. Each type of energy requires attention and balance. If you spend all your emotional energy overthinking, procrastinating, comparing, judging, multitasking, people-pleasing, criticizing, and under pressure, etc. it will rob you of the time you can spend doing things you enjoy or the things you need to do to change your physical health. Likewise, if you have a physical health condition that has not been properly addressed then this can deplete your energy stores, making it difficult to find the mental energy needed to focus on your diet to correct the physical imbalance. Furthermore, you may cope with anxiety or regulate difficult emotions by filling your day with as many tasks as possible, some call this a workaholic. Working too much can take a large amount of your energy, leaving very little energy for much else sacrificing your wellbeing.

Mental Energy

Your mental energy is drained if you are doing too many things at one time. Do you rush around in the morning, misplace your cell phone, or schedule appointments too close together? Mental energy is largely based on processing information and being focused and attentive.

Emotional Energy

Your emotional energy is drained if you are having difficulty being aware of your emotions and how to express them in a healthy way. This may lead to overwhelming emotions, stress, and anxiety. See more information on my Anxiety and Hormones page.

Physical Energy

Your physical energy is drained if your body is not balanced. Allergies, sleep apnea, low on vitamin D, low B12, poor diet- sugar, caffeine, too many calories, not enough calories, anemia, celiac disease, hypothyroidism, low oxygen levels, alcohol, too little exercise or too much, dehydration, adrenal fatigue, hormone imbalance, chronic infections, inflammation, medication side effects, autoimmune conditions, heart disease, cancer and treatment of cancer, and lack of proper sleep schedule.

The first step in determining why you are experiencing low energy is by ruling out physical imbalances that require medical and/or nutritional intervention. Sometimes, the imbalances are corrected with simple adjustments that can really change your life. Other times, they require more in-depth medical nutrition therapy and/or medical attention.

The type of lab work I order is used to identify imbalances in your body that are root causes of your symptoms. Choose a Self-Starter Plan or Comprehensive Plan to determine which lab tests are right for you.

Food Sensitivity Testing – I use this test as a tool to create a diet plan that is unique to your biochemistry and will pinpoint exactly which foods are creating an inflammatory response in your body and robbing you of your energy.

Hormone Testing – This saliva test determines if your progesterone, estrogen, testosterone, and DHEA levels could be contributing to your low energy levels.

Adrenal Testing – This is my go-to test when clients have experienced major stressors in the past or are currently experiencing more stress than usual. Stress can disrupt adrenal function. This saliva test determines how well your body is responding to stress by looking at your cortisol levels throughout the day. Your low energy can be from low cortisol output. Until this is corrected, it will be difficult to pick up your energy levels any other way.

GI MAP Testing – This test detects microbes that may be disturbing normal microbial balance or contributing to your low energy levels, as well as indicators of digestion, absorption, inflammation, and immune function, all from a single stool sample.

Micronutrient Testing – This test can pinpoint vitamin, mineral, amino acids, and omega-3 fatty acid deficiencies, as well as assess cellular absorption that could be affecting your energy levels.

Diet Prescription

This diet prescription is a general list of recommendations for this health concern. For a personalized diet prescription, Choose the Self-Starter Plan or Comprehensive Plan.

This will largely depend on what we find from your assessment and lab testing. If we have ruled out physical imbalances requiring testing, then I recommend working on making general nutrition changes (more water, more whole foods, less sugar, less caffeine, less processed food, etc.). If you need my assistance in creating a plan, please visit my Meal Planning page for more information.

Supplement Prescription

This supplement prescription is a general list of recommendations for this health concern. For a personalized diet prescription, Choose the Self-Starter Plan or Comprehensive Plan.
This will largely depend on “why” you have low energy and because there are so many factors, I cannot provide even a general supplement list.
